[Assignment] [In Your Journal] Setting the Table by Creating a Plot Diagram

Background

For this assignment students will do some online research about plot diagrams. Many students may have made one in language arts class. With video, you are trying to tell a story. Having a plot diagram will usually make that story better.

Directions

  1. Use a search engine to find information on plot diagrams.
  2. Sketch a plot diagram in your journal.
  3. Make sure to label the following parts of the diagram:
    • Exposition
    • Rising Action
    • Climax
    • Falling Action
    • Resolution
  4. Write a brief 1-2 sentence explanation of the features or characteristics of the five parts listed above.

Setting the Table

Plot diagrams are similar to the same steps for having a great meal.

  1. During the exposition you are basically setting the table. If you see a soup spoon or a steak knife you have some idea of what is for dinner. Likewise, if you see a wizard or a spy, you have some idea of what will take place in the story.
  2. The rising action is like getting an appetizer. It is something to increase your appetite and make you ready for the next course.
  3. The climax is the main course of the meal. It is the moment you have waited for since you sat down. It should be the best part of the meal.
  4. The falling action is the dessert course. You may have just stuffed yourself but you can find room for some ice cream or cake. This part of the plot adds a finishing touch to the story.
  5. During the resolution it's time to pay the bill. All loose ends should be wrapped up at this part of the story.

Questions

  1. First, think about your favorite story or movie.
  2. What happens during the plot?
  3. Create a plot diagram in your journal.
  4. Describe what happens in your story during each of the stages of the plot diagram. Write 1-2 sentences for each stage.
  5. Now that you are hungry from thinking about food, describe your favorite meal. What would you eat as an appetizer, main course, and dessert.

Background

For this project, students will create a simple, six-shot storyboard. Students will use this storyboard to shoot and edit their first video project.

For this project you will plan, shoot, and edit a video whose topic is something inside the classroom. For example, the tarantula, the computers, a desk, or a chair. It can be something serious or something silly.

Directions

Label a fresh sheet in your journal with the heading: "Story Board Activity #01".

  1. Draw six squares of approximately equal size on the sheet.
  2. Leave approximately two lines of space in between each row of boxes.
  3. Label the boxes #1-6.

After you have created the six squares:

  1. Choose one of the six shots from the Video Editing Basics assignment to be your first shot in this video.
  2. Label square #1 with the name of the shot you want to use.
  3. In square #1, sketch what you want that shot to look like.
    • Make sure to indicate direction for any movements for the camera and/or actors/actresses in the shot.
  4. In the space under square #1, make any notes about the shot you can't easily sketch.
    • Examples include: sound effects or music for the scene, props, and lightning levels.
  5. Repeat these steps for the remaining five squares.

[Assignment] Video Editing Basics

We are starting a lesson on video editing. Students that have taken T.V. production class will be familiar with most of this information. Before we start creating masterpieces we need to study the basics. Today you will need to do some basic research to develop some background knowledge on the topic.

Shot Types

You need to research at least six different shot types used in video recording and editing. You need to record the following information in your journal:

  1. Name of the shot type.
  2. Short description of the shot type.
  3. Reason for using the shot type.
  4. Make a small sketch in your journal of what that shot type looks like.
MediaCollege.com is an excellent resource for this information.

The Rule of Thirds

In photography and video editing there is a concept known as The Rule of Thirds. In your journal please do the following:

  1. Write a definition for the rule of thirds.
  2. Sketch a picture representing the rule of thirds.
  3. Write a short explanation on why to use the rule of thirds.

Story boarding

Story boarding is a technique used in video production, game design, and other creative projects. Use your research skills to answer the following questions:

  1. What is the purpose of story boarding?
  2. Who is generally involved in the story boarding process?
  3. Briefly describe the story board process. What are the steps used in story boarding?

This is due before you leave today.

[Assignment] Pixar's 22 Rules of Storytelling

Info.

Pixar is one of the most popular and successful movie studios in North America. They have made movies such as the Toy Story franchise, the Cars franchise, Wall-E, Monsters Inc., and many more. In addition to cutting edge animation techniques, their movies tell great stories. The article linked below lists the 22 rules that Pixar uses when developing their stories. These rules can help you write your script and story board.

Article

Please click here for the article.

Directions

AFTER reading the article, choose TEN of the rules that seem useful to you. Then complete the following in your journal:

  1. Write a brief summary of the rule.
  2. Write one or two sentences explaining how this rule will help you create your video.
This assignment is due by the END of the following class period.

[Assignment] Camera Movements

Background

In addition to the various types of camera shots you have learned there are also some industry standard camera movements. These camera movements can add visual appeal to the video. When shooting your final video project you will want to use some of these camera movements combined with different shot types to make the best video you can.

The camera movement types are described AT THE BOTTOM of the page on this MediaCollege.com website.

Directions

For the camera movement types you need to write the following information in your journal:

  1. Name of Camera Movement
  2. Short Description of the Movement
  3. A Sketch of what that camera movement would look like. (You can use arrows for most of them to display the directions of movement.)
Everyone needs to find information for these movements:
  1. Pan
  2. Zoom
  3. Tilt
Students must also find information on three additional camera movements for a total of six.

This assignment is due at the start of the next class period.
